Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity's 102nd Anniversary Convention, held July 2008 in Kansas City, Missouri, is covered in-depth in this edition of The Sphinx. More than 15,000 people passed through the Convention venues; and the conference had a $5 million impact on Kansas City and the metropolitan area. Also, ballots for the Fraternity's 2008 General Presidential election were tallied and Herman "Skip" Mason was announced as the 33rd General President. Participants and award recipients at the 2008 Convention included Soledad O'Brien, anchor and special correspondent for CNN's Special Investigation Unit; and Dr. Randal Pinkett, season-four winner of NBC's The Apprentice.
Generations of Olympic Games success for the United States can be attributed to the Fraternity's Alpha Athletes who helped win glory for the nation as well as racial pride for African Americans. A special feature, entitled Alpha Phi Alpha and the Olympic Games, looks at early Alpha Phi Alpha Olympic medalists whose participation in the Olympic Games dates back to 1924. This Sphinx edition details the previously untold story of the triumphs of Alpha Athletes – such as Jesse Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Eddie Tolan, Fritz Pollard, Jr., Cornelius Johnson, Dave Albritton, Archie Williams, John Woodruff and others – at the politically-charged Olympic Games.
