The MLK Dream Concert to raise money and awareness about the national memorial being build in Washington, D.C. to honor the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is the featured topic of this edition of The Sphinx. World-class performers such as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, John Legend, Ludacris, Joss Stone, Wyclef Jean, Carlos Santana, Garth Brooks, and many others performed at the once-in-a-lifetime concert held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Congress passed Joint Resolutions in 1996 authorizing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to establish a memorial honoring Dr. King to be built in the nation's capital. The Ceremonial Groundbreaking for the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial โ which will be located on the National Mall between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials โ was held on November 13, 2006.
The Sphinx issue also looks at the Fraternity's Distinguished Collegians and Education Foundation Scholarship Award winners; the organization's 15th Annual Congressional Black Caucus Reception in Washington, D.C.; and Alpha Brothers who were awarded top honors by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America โ Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity's corporate partner organization.
